Born in 1968 in St. Petersburg, the Russian violist, composer and conductor Juri Gilbo began his musical life with violin lessons at the age of four. His studies took him to the St. Petersburg State Conservatorium and subsequently to the celebrated German violist Tabea Zimmermann at the University for Music and Performing Arts, Frankfurt am Main. Juri Gilbo studied conducting with Luigi Sagrestano and made his conducting debut in 1997. Since then, his concerts have taken him throughout Europe, to the United States, Brazil, Japan, China, Israel, Lebanon, Turkey and Dubai.

In 1998, Maestro Gilbo took over the position of Music Director of the Russian Chamber Philharmonic St Petersburg. He has performed to sold-out halls and Standing Ovations at major halls, such as the Berlin Philharmonic Hall, Salzburg Festival House, Munich Philharmonic Hall, Tonhalle Zurich, Cologne Philharmonic Hall, Alte Oper Frankfurt, Bayreuth Opera House, El Teatro National de Costa Rica, Is Sanat Hall Istanbul and Bern Concert House, among other halls.

Maestro Gilbo’s highlights in 2010/2011 include gala concerts at prestigious centers throughout Europe to celebrate the 20th Anniversary of the Russian Chamber Philharmonic Orchestra with soloists such as Sir James Galway, Mischa Maisky, Sergei Nakariakov, Giora Feidman, Sharon Kam, Fabio di Casola, Liana Isakadze and Andrei Gavrilov and many others. This fall 2011 he was invited to lead the Xiamen Philharmonic Orchestra in China.

In 2012, Maestro Gilbo will lead the Netania Symphony Orchestra in Israel and tour with the Russian Philharmonic in Spain, Turkey, Germany, Italy and Austria. He is scheduled to tour the United States in 2013.

Maestro Gilbo has appeared with his orchestra at international festivals such as the Salzburg Festival (Austria), Beethoven Festival, Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival, Rheingau Music Festival, Festspiele Mecklenburg-Vorpommern (Germany), Izmir Festival (Turkey), Al Bustan Festival Beirut (Lebanon), Brno Music Festival (Czech Republic), Tiflis Music Festival (Georgia), Festival Musique en Vendée (France) and the Santa-Fee Music Summer (Switzerland) amongst others.

His recently released CD on the Sony label, with music by Carl Maria von Weber featuring the Russian Chamber Philharmonic St. Petersburg and clarinetist Fabio di Casola, received the “Editor’s Choice” Award from Gramophone Magazine.

Juri Gilbo currently resides in Frankfurt am Main, Germany.
